Quotes and what I learnt from them

You said you trust Ping
Why is Mulan any different?"
by Mulan
Mulan really gets to the point with this line. Really Shang?

Why is Mulan any different than Ping
He needs to leave his hurt feelings & pride aside.
The Lesson we learn from this one is that: We are all equal.
I like this quote because she’s very straight forward.
Other than the movie Aladdin, Mulan is one of my favourites.

How about a girl who's got a brain, who always speaks her mind?"
Lesson: Speak your mind, because what you have to say is important, no matter who you are.
Also: girls rule.

Lol this series is completely girl power inspired

But I don’t wanna kick the other kid’s butt. This is one of my favourites.
I don’t really know why though.
Hahaha….
Maybe its because she says it with her breakfast in her mouth.
So funny.

Other than the movie Aladdin, Mulan is one of my favourites

Why is my reflection someone I don't know?"
by Mulan
It shows how frustrated Mulan was about not being able to express her emotions and thoughts, having to hide the real herself.

She looks stunning as a mermaid

This is 1 of the saddest quotes in the whole movie.
It has always made me cry.
I can relate to feeling like you have to hide who you are.
this part makes me cry like a 3 year old

Now I see, that if I were truly to be myself,       I would break my family's heart"
by Mulan

This is one that breaks my heart.
I know how she feels.
I sometimes wonder if my family would be better off if I was someone else.

The lessons we learn from Mulan

Follow Your Heart

Mulan is about a young woman whose father is called to fight in a war against her enemy. Her father’s injured, so she uses her courage to dress up as a boy and fight in the war.
In the end, she becomes one of the 1st feminine heroes of the world!

Follow your heart no matter what.
Even if your heart tells you to shrug off your solemn vow and pursue your happiness at the expense of 1000's of lives.

 Believe in Yourself

There are many stories about girls who knew they had a job to do but had to disguise themselves as males in order to get the job done.

Throughout history this has been the case. Mulan could be wonderful jumping off place for you to have a talk about your dreams and aspirations.
You can tell yourself to have the courage to go forward with determination to achieve your goals.

Anyone Can Be A Hero!

I think this is a great moral, and in my personal opinion, the best.
Really, if you think about it, anyone CAN be a hero, whether young, old, small, large, short, tall, any race, any gender.
Even a baby can be a hero by teaching someone a lesson about caring for young ones.
A baby can never swing in and save someones life, but it can teach a lesson in a subtle way.

Do What You Can

She didn't want to wear makeup & be a harem wife.
She wanted to do something else with her life. She went against what tradition said and took her fathers place in battle.
Girls can do anything they want, just as boys can.

You Can Always Change Things

No matter who you are or your place in the world, you can always change things.
Like one of the lines in the movie is a good example:
A single grain of rice can tip the scale.
One man may be the difference between victory and defeat."

Just The Way You Are

Throughout the movie, Mulan is portrayed as the awkward, clumsy girl who may never amount to anything.
The Song "reflection" is mulan's struggle with who she is and who she wants to be.
She later finds in the end--after kinda SAVING China--that she was beautiful and capable just the way she was.

Ignore The Pessimists

You must tune out the naysayers.
Mulan fought all kinds of uphill battles — quite literally, in some cases — but ended up bringing glory to her country because she didn’t listen to those determined to bring her down.
Even if your major is still undecided, or you’re not doing so well in a class, it's OK.
Focus on the goal ahead, and enjoy the looks on everyone’s faces when you achieve it.

You Are More Than What People Think

1st off, they tell her she will never be anything unless she is married.
Then, she is almost killed for trying to sneak into the army--even through she was a BEAST soldier. Remember that scene where she been found out and she alone in the snow? She realizes that the whole reason she joined the army was to help elevate herself and prove she was more than what people thought.

Never Give Up

"The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all"
This quote is saying that a person who can handle adversity is the best type of person. Mulan could have easily gave up on the army after they let her go but she fought to keep them safe.

If a person faces adversity and still shine then they have shown that they are a leader.

Family Is The Most Important.

Mulan is always thinking about her family, and her family is always thinking about her. They guide her and help her continue on in her mission. Mulan's father throws the sword of the villain guy--a symbol of Mulan bringing her victory to him--aside to hug his daughter.
He only cares that is daughter is home safe & nothing else.

She goes through a lot of obstacles, but in the end, becomes one of the first feminine heroes in the world!

Bad lessons from Mulan
girls you only worthy of respect and being called smart and strong when you act like a man ”
Are you saying that only men possess creativity, independence, intelligence, strength…. and using those traits mean girls are “acting like a man”?
Shame on you.

Running off to war solves all your problems” – 1st of all, that did NOT solve all her problems. Mulan “ran off to war” to replace her father & save him from a certain death.
I bet you wouldn’t have the balls to do that for your dad.

lazy and unmotivated” – ….

How is cutting off her hair, joining the army despite females being explicitly and severely forbidden from the battlefield, constantly attempting to protect her disguise, working to improve her fitness and fighting and skills, winning battles, etc… considered
‘lazy and unmotivated’?
Oh please.

girl power

Give up everything you want to blindly do what your family and society want
You seem to imply that selfishness is a virtue. Actually, she is serving a higher purpose than herself-family, country.
This form of selflessness is found cross culturally i.e. in Ancient Roman times: pietas, or, piety.
Aeneas forsaking his romantic relationship with Dido to fulfill his destiny of founding a great civilization…
Mulan is upholding morally sound traditional values that you, immersed in a capitalistic, self-interested society, fail to recognize the beauty of.
There are actually things more important than your own interests?!
Shocker!!!

Marry a stranger”
The man has been her general and trainer for months…they fought together and conversed together… And somehow, sharing traumatic experiences like war bring people together. They are closer to each other more than couples are nowadays.

Mulan cowering in fear because zomg men and matchmakers scary!”
The traditional Chinese/Asian culture makes women entirely submissive, and forbids women from even making eye contact with men. She has to show respect, even fear, to all males. Please educate yourself about other cultures, and get out of your American bubble. Also, who wouldn’t be scared of a creepy matchmaker forcing upon her an unwanted fate? Furthermore, throughout the movie she is understandably nervous that men will find out her disguise and then punish her and her loved ones for her deception. Her getting caught prematurely would result in disastrous, probably deadly consequences as well as shame.
Your arguments are so disgustingly flawed as well as culturally blind it’s not even funny, and you used way more cliches and non-backed up generalizations than this writer did.

Stay tuned for my Mushu post that's up next
